Event information:

Kawartha Conservation and Scugog Connections invite you to come out for a cleanup day along the shores of Lake Scugog. This event is one of hundreds taking place across the country on September 18 as part of the annual Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup.

At last year's event, volunteers successfully cleaned up the Port Perry Causeway, filling 24 garbage and recycling bags. This year, Birdseye Park, Palmer Park, Joe Fowler Park and Baagwating Park will each get a cleaning.

"Approximately 40 volunteers are needed to cover this long stretch of shoreline," says Carlie McDonald, Scugog Connections Program Coordinator. "It's a perfect event for families looking to get involved in our local environment; and high school students can put the time toward community service hours."

"If you've been down to the lake recently, you likely noticed all kinds of trash caught between rocks and plants along the shoreline. You can find everything from plastic water bottles and coffee cups, to fishing line and batteries," says Shalin Abbott, Kawartha Conservation Stewardship Coordinator. "The cleanup is one of the ways we can help protect the lake. This will keep garbage from smothering plants, being ingested by wildlife and even releasing pollutants into the water. A clean shoreline will also help out local tourism."

All ages are welcome to come out. Participants will be meeting at Birdseye Park at 10 a.m. Gloves, garbage bags and refreshments will be provided. Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required. Please visit www.shorelinecleanup.ca or contact Carlie McDonald at Scugog Connections: 905.985.3279,
